Pie N Mash is a friendly and optimistic community of over 100 people in south east London. As a mutual aid group, we work together to make sure we all have what we need to thrive. We are based out of The Field, on Queen’s Road in New Cross.
Our community
But our project isn’t just about food. It’s also about growing the connections between people in our community. It’s about getting to know each other and making friends in our local area. It’s about understanding what makes our neighbours happy and what worries them. It’s about coming together to solve problems and celebrate achievements. It’s about helping people when they ask and being able to ask when we need help too.
We welcome anyone living in south east London to join our community.
How we have grown
Pie N Mash started as a squatted social cafe on Deptford High Street in October 2019. We knew we needed to come together as a community to deal with the social injustices that are part of our society. Our dream is to build community and connections with neighbours. With each person that joined, our dream grew stronger.
In March 2020, The Field kindly offered to host our activities. This gave us the stability to allow the project to grow.
How we work together
We are horizontally organized and non-hierarchical, meaning we all contribute our time to make the project work. No one person is in charge and we encourage everyone to take part in leading the group. We make decisions democratically and work together as equals to support one another.
We are working to build a stronger and more loving community in south east London. We are always looking for ways to make the project more sustainable and democratic. We are proud of our community and what we have achieved so far.
